Worship and Music

SUNDAY FEBRUARY 5: During Epiphany we read the stories of the first things Jesus did at the beginning of the three years of his public ministry, beginning with his baptism in the river Jordan. In today’s Gospel (Mark 1:29-39) we come to a second story of healing, and we are told that at evening all the sick people of the village were brought to Jesus. sorts of sick people were brought to Jesus. Note at the end of the Gospel that Jesus got up early, while it was still dark, and went out alone to pray. References to Jesus going off alone to pray are woven through his story. In Isaiah (40:21-31) the writer asks have you not heard about God the creator? In the passage from his First Letter to the Corinthians (9:16-23), Paul writes that if he proclaims the Gospel, it is no reason for him to boast. He has an obligation to tell people the Good News (which is what “Gospel” means) of God’s love for every human being. The preacher has the same obligation in the pulpit of St. Chrysostom’s – it is what we are here for. Note in the collect the wonderful prayer: “…give us the liberty of that abundant life which you have made known to us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ…”—Raymond Webster

Since l995 volunteers at St Chrysostom’s have been cooking and delivering a meal once a month to the facility on Sedgwick - known as Dolores’ Safe Haven.  The late Noma Cave worked tirelessly on this project and it is in her memory that we want to continue - and even expand – this work.  If you would like join us please contact Pamela Marks.

HATS, SOCKS, AND GLOVES! Bishop Lee’s 2012 Challenge. Give the Gift of Warmth. During 2011 and 2012, Bishop Lee has charged the deacons of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago to collect mittens, gloves, socks and hats for people in need. This year, our Deacon Rev. Larry A. Green has been asked to head up this program throughout the Diocese of Chicago. Please give generously to our sisters and brothers who are facing a harsh winter. Bring your contributions, or $10 donations made payable to St. Chrysostom’s, to church on Sundays. The items will be collected and distributed to agencies and organizations that serve our community.

MISSION TRIPS Two teams from the Diocese of Chicago will be visiting our diocesan companion diocese of Southeast Mexico this month. February 5-13 the Rev. Ray and Eve Webster, Judy and John Bross, Dorothy Ramm and the Rev. George Hull will be making a trip to the southern highlands of Mexico, where a new congregation is being established in the indigenous village of Yochib (supported by our Fiesta – this past year’s “Brunch Auction” a wonderful parish tradition – an earlier Brunch Auction provided four Chevrolet pick up trucks for priests in Southeast Mexico and water for a priest’s house). How did we get involved? Because of the companion relationship between our diocese and the Diocese of Southeast Mexico. There are Episcopalians in Mexico? While obviously Mexico is predominantly Roman Catholic, the rise of Pentecostalism in Latin America means the Episcopal Church has role to play as an alternative in the middle (our tradition of via media). — Raymond Webster
